Madrid is a very popular tourist and business destination and the city is easy to reach by air, with extremely frequent flights and good connections from all over the world. Located 9 miles / 15 km from the centre of Madrid it currently handles around 30 million passengers each year.

This modern airport has three large passenger terminals which are usually very busy. Major airlines include Air France, Avianca, American Airlines, British Airways, Egypt Air, Iberia, Iberia Regional / Air Nostrum, SAS, Spanair, Swissair, US Airways and many others. In general, flying into Spain tends to be a relatively hassle-free experience.

The following terminals serve many airlines, travelling to a wide range of locations. The terminals are connected by a shuttle bus.

  • Terminal 1 - the largest terminal, handling most international and domestic flights, with check-in desks 100 to 345
  • Terminal 2 - handles domestic Spanish flights and Iberia European services by Air Europa, Iberia and Spanair airlines, with check-in desks 400 to 561
  • Terminal 3 - handles Iberia Regional / Air Nostrum flights and Iberia domestic shuttles

Two ring roads circle Madrid - an outer one (M40) and an inner road (M30). Head for Paseo de la Castellana - this is central Madrid's main road and most of the city's central locations can easily be reached from here.

Madrid Airport (MAD) By Bus - Madrid, Spain
The airport buses depart from the arrivals level of each terminal and run from 04:45 to 02:00. They operate every ten minutes between 06:00 to 21:30 and every fifteen minutes outside of these hours. The buses run to the Plaza de Colon along Route 89.

Madrid Airport (MAD) By Taxi or Shuttle - Madrid, Spain
A taxi ride from the airport into the centre of Madrid lasts around 25 to 30 minutes and is a quick way to travel into the city centre, depending on traffic. There are usually plenty of authorised taxis lined up outside and the fares are quite reasonable.

Madrid Airport (MAD) By Train - Madrid, Spain
The main rail network is not directly linked to Madrid Barajas Airport , but the Madrid Metro system joins the airport to the city and provides a convenient and fast way to travel into the centre of Madrid. The Metro system connects to the main train stations and trains run daily between 06:00 to 01:15. To reach the city centre, the journey involves changing trains at Mar de Cristal (Line 8).
